A little cake-design reminder: simple doesn’t have to mean boring.

A limited colour palette, one strong focal point and a few beautifully finished details can often have more impact than trying to fit every idea onto one cake.

It’s especially useful when you’re working with a smaller cake — scale the design back rather than shrinking every single element.

Sometimes less really does give the details more room to shine.

From Sweetiepie to The Cake Mixer… there have been a LOT of cakes along the way. 🎂

We might now be creating them from Ruakākā, but it’s still the same love of edible art behind every order. Designs have changed, trends have come and gone, and somehow there is always another new cake idea to try!

Cake inspiration ✨

One of the best things about custom cakes is seeing how one idea can be interpreted in so many different ways. Colour, texture, piping and toppers can completely change the feel of a design.

When you’re saving cake inspiration, don’t worry about finding one cake that is absolutely perfect — save the individual details you love. A colour palette from one cake, piping from another and a topper style from somewhere else can become something completely unique.

What cake style are you loving at the moment — vintage piping, clean buttercream, fondant or something completely different?

Still making cakes — just a little further north these days! 🎂

Sweetiepie may have evolved into The Cake Mixer and moved to Ruakākā, but the cake decorating certainly hasn’t stopped. We’re still creating celebration cakes every week, and we still love seeing familiar names from our Auckland days pop up.

For our East Auckland followers: Auckland delivery can sometimes be arranged for custom cakes, depending on the date and location.

It’s lovely to still have so many of you following along after all these years. 💕

A little hello from us 👋🎂

A lot has changed since the Sweetiepie days in East Auckland — including a rather large move north!

The Cake Mixer is now based in Ruakākā, Northland, but we certainly haven't forgotten our Auckland customers. ❤️

We still have a wonderful community following this page, so we'll be sharing some of our latest cakes, decorating inspiration and occasional updates here too.

And yes — Auckland cake delivery can sometimes still be arranged, depending on the date and location.
