Meet our Mills Lane barista, Waiaria. She splits her time between the bar and her freelance design work.
Outside of Atomic, she’s working on projects centred around mātauranga Māori in conservation and wellbeing, along with illustration work and time on the water with her waka ama team. Not much sitting still unless she has to.
Back on shift, it’s usually a batch brew or a Brazil through Aeropress.

We’ve got a table full of interesting coffees brought home by our Head Roaster August from her World Cup Tasters adventures in Bangkok. Interesting varieties, premium lots & crazy quality Thai-grown coffees. We’re feeling generous, so you’re invited to the cupping table next Wednesday from 4pm at our Kingsland roastery. Let us know you’ll be there - link in bio to rsvp.

POV: make a blend with August.
We post-blend all our components — different origins, roasted separately to get the best out of each of them. Then the mixing game begins. Exacting ratio for consistency, and so your go-to can be tasty all year long.

Being the Brewers Cup coffee sponsor comes with the exciting task of picking a coffee that would be used by the finalists as part of the compulsory service. One coffee, the same for everyone. No information to go off, and 30 minutes to come up with a brew recipe for the six finalists.
We were looking for a balanced washed coffee, with good depth of flavour, acidity and sweetness levels, but nothing too obvious or one-dimensional, so it could be interpreted by the finalists in a full range of ways and let their brewing skills shine. We found a winner in this washed-processed typica for Felipe Luzon’s farm in Ecuador (fun fact - no one could guess the origin when we unveiled the coffee!). Very bright upfront, with lots of complex citrus notes, like aromatic, zesty and slightly bitter orange peel. Clean and clear flavours, but with a ton of syrupy caramel sweetness in the aftertaste.
We created our own take on a recipe, using the Hario Switch to add immersion to manual filter brewing and get all the richness of flavours into the cup. Recipe & coffee available online, or give the brew a go at our cafes and espresso bars.

Brewers Cup is everything we love — passion, craft, and serious skills. So we couldn’t pass on the
opportunity to support NZ’s top brewers as they battle it out to earn their spot on the World stage. It
takes massive courage to put yourself out there, so huge congrats to everyone who took the plunge,
and to NZ’s 2026 Brewers Cup winner, Dove Chen ! And thank you to the NZ Specialty Association and all the judges, volunteers and fellow sponsors for supporting local talent.
As the coffee sponsor, our job was not only to keep everyone caffeinated, but also to source an exciting coffee for the finals - more on that in the next post!

For those nostalgic of the late summer glow. This one tastes like sun-filled yellow fruits and warming sultana sweetness — you'll want to pair it with fruit toast!

What our head roasters sees when she's making our blends.

It’s almost show time for August, NZ’s 2025 Cup Tasters champion and Atomic’s Head Roaster. At 7:30pm NZT, she’ll be repping NZ on the world stage.
Eight sets of three cups of brewed coffee, and you have to identify the odd one out. As she put it when we interviewed her post-victory last year, it’s a game of accuracy and speed. But it’s also a game of taste and a game of the mind. So go have fun - we’re all behind you & super proud 🥲

Your colleagues are wondering where you disappeared to. You can keep that all to yourself or you tell them Atomic Mills Lane: your back-alley spot in the city.

Its deeply funky aroma will make you think you've clocked this coffee before even tasting it - but be ready for a surprise. Wild berries take front seat, with a complex aftertaste like red wine grapes. Rock melon aroma follows through, creating a unique cup, rounded by bubble gum sweetness. Grab it at one of our venues or online.

10 days to Brewers Cup! A couple of weeks back, we held a mini competition among our team to find out who would be Atomic’s brewing champ on the national stage. Thanks to everyone who stepped up & gave it a go, and congrats to Keanan for taking the top spot!
What’s Brewers Cup? It’s a soft brewing competition where the country’s top brewers choose a coffee, create a recipe and present it on stage across a 10 minute routine. They get scored by a panel of judges on attributes like acidity, sweetness, aroma and aftertaste. And for those making it to the finals, there’ll be a ‘compulsory service’ round: same coffee, same grinder, same water and serving vessel.
The competition’s back in New Zealand for the first time in 20 years, and we’re the proud sponsors of the coffee used for the compulsory round. Come cheer on Keanan, learn some brewing tips & try competition level coffees Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd May at the Tuesday Club in the CBD. More info via

If you know your classics and you're already a fan of those fresh citrus and sweet stone fruit flavours typical of washed Ethiopian coffees, this one's for you. Bonus points if you like flatties — this one works a treat with milk, with caramelised sweetness and fruity yoghurt notes.

Rocket Espresso machines on display, Atomic coffee on tap. The Rocket Store is where home baristas come to talk gear, beans, and figure out how to make the best espresso outside of us making one for you.

With Outliers, we hunt for coffees that break the mould. Like Rocket Flower - smells and tastes like you’re taking an evening stroll down the streets of Seville during orange blossom season. Unmistakable, intoxicating, and fully intentional. It’s the result of enzymatic processing, designed to highlight a clear floral profile. A true outlier.

Tattooing is a strange kind of job. You spend hours with someone you’ve often just met, talking, working, and leaving them with something permanent.
We spent time with Dan from Sacred Tattoo in our neighbours series about the craft, the people, and the rhythm of a good day in the shop

Seasonal single origins are back, and this new lineup is sweeter than ever. You’ve got tropical, zesty, strawberry notes on espresso, toffee & blueberry from Ethiopia, and apple & vanilla in our washed Guatemala.
But our highlight this month is the naturally-processed Kenyan from Sasini Estates - a rare gem that turns the usual brightness and acidity of Kenyans into deep purple grape and blackberry flavours.
Give them a go in store or get yourself a bag online.

Thanks for another amazing year. In 2025, we put a lot of focus on coffee (surprising, right?) — we gave our single origin program a facelift: new labels, new colours, clear roast profiles. We showed up at coffee competitions and jumped on all spots on the podium. We hosted tasting events for our community. We said farewell to amazing people and welcomed new faces. We opened a new espresso bar in town! And we got to work with some of the best operators out there, and kept supporting 100s of cafe owners across the country.
We’re pretty excited for 2026 — there’s cool stuff already in the pipeline. Think more community, more education, new looks. And always the same dedication to honing our craft, sharing with you, and bringing you some of the best coffees out there. Bring it on!

We’re keeping the doors open this holiday season - Kingsland & the Rocket Store will stay open throughout the break (except stat days). It’ll be weekend hours and a slightly reduced offering, but pretty much business as usual.
Our CBD espresso bars will take a break but will be back by the time you slot back into your office chair 🫡

‘Tis the season of gifting, and we’re feeling generous. We’re shouting a Varia VS3 grinder and a kilo of our house blend with any Rocket espresso machine purchase, until the end of the year, because you deserve barista-level coffee from the comfort of your bed.

What people say
Atomic Coffee Roasters is a coffee shop that has been serving amazing coffee since 1992. They started as a scruffy kid on Ponsonby Road, pumping out live music and top-notch coffee from between fine-dining restaurants. As they hit full steam, the queues grew longer than their slice of the strip could handle. So in 1995, they made the move to Kingsland, finding their groove as part of this creative, eclectic community.
Since then, Atomic Coffee Roasters has poured their energy into crafting uncompromisingly good coffee. They held nothing back, roasting into the wee hours, experimenting, testing and tasting until their beans were the best. As well as their Kingsland roastery, they now operate three bustling espresso bars in central Auckland where you can enjoy their rich and robust flavors.
Their small-batch hand-roasted coffee is also available in hundreds of cafes across New Zealand. Atomic Coffee Roasters has built its reputation on expertise and grounded flavors that are designed to satisfy your good taste.
Located on New North Road, Atomic Coffee Roasters is a must-visit for anyone who loves great coffee. With their commitment to quality and passion for excellence, you won't be disappointed with what they have to offer.
