Saan on Ponsonby Road in Auckland is no exception to this rule. This Thai restaurant takes inspiration from the Lanna & Isaan flavors of Thailand to create dishes that are bursting with flavor and authenticity.
One of Saan's standout dishes is the Vegetable Mussaman curry with jackfruit, lotus root, baby onions, red kumara, fried vermicelli and curry leaves. This dish is a perfect example of how Saan caters to both meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. The vegan and gluten-free version of this dish is served at medium heat and is best enjoyed with jasmine rice. For those who prefer meat, there's also a lamb version made with Hawkes Bay lamb shoulder.
Saan's commitment to quality ingredients shines through in every dish they serve. Sadly, due to staffing shortages and other Covid-related challenges, Saan has closed its doors. However, we can still support their sister restaurants Cafe Hanoi, Britomart and Ghost Street which remain open and appreciate our ongoing support.
Overall, Saan was a wonderful addition to the Auckland food scene while it lasted. Their dedication to authentic Thai flavors will be missed by many but we can continue to enjoy their legacy through their sister restaurants.
