Catalina Cafe in Hobsonville Point is a unique and charming cafΓ© that has a rich history dating back to 1938. The building was originally used for avionics repairs and as a signals and communications centre for the R.N.Z.A.F, but it has since been transformed into a beautiful cafΓ© space that seamlessly blends historical references with modern design touches.
The high stud ceiling, sash windows, and native timber floors have all been preserved, while the old rimu tongue and groove walls have been recycled into stunning communal tables and counters. The stools and cushions have also been designed by artist/designer Mike Petre using old army blankets, adding to the cafΓ©'s unique character.
Catalina Cafe is not only aesthetically pleasing but also eco-friendly. The cafΓ© is fitted out entirely with energy-saving technology such as LED lights, solar power backup, hot water heat pumps, rainwater tanks for grey water and gardens, and fibre communications. In addition to this, they grow their own herbs and vegetables in their gardens.
Overall, Catalina Cafe offers a one-of-a-kind experience that combines history with modernity while being environmentally conscious. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in Auckland!
