A little bowl of sweetness to share and remember.

Today I’m remembering my late husband, Andrew. In my culture, we like to mark this day by making something to share — a way to honour our loved ones and spread a bit of kindness in their memory.

I’ve made a traditional sweet called Aşure (or Noah’s Pudding) — it’s full of grains, fruits, and nuts, and meant to celebrate abundance, gratitude, and togetherness. It is comforting and full of heart.

Once upon a time in a kitchen in bustling Istanbul, my dear friend Betul waved her wooden spoon like a magic wand and conjured up this soul-warming elixir: tender chicken, plump chickpeas, and zesty zing of lime that makes your tastebuds do the dervish dance.
